Me and Pete
by Katie Honnette on May 21st, 2009 in Blog

Pete Steiner and Katie at Radio Mankato.
Last summer, I had a bad experience with radio. Kay Sauck (publisher of Womeninc…and my mom) invited me to join her on a weekly talk show. I went along under the impression that I was there for moral support and that I wouldn’t have to say a thing on air. But, then, in the middle of the live broadcast, the host asked me a question, inviting me into the conversation. The only problem was: I hadn’t been listening. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was thinking about where I wanted to go for lunch after the radio show was over.
So, I was tongue-tied and unprepared and well, my answer was terrible.
I swore off any future “on the air” situations forever.
Then, one morning, Kay calls me from the road. She said, “I am suppose to be on Talk of the Town with Pete Steiner today at one o’clock, but I have another meeting. Would you be willing to take my place?”
…It was one of those questions that isn’t really a question. So, I said yes. Then I hyperventilated.
Thankfully, my dad was able to ride along with me up to Mankato for my second radio interview. On the drive, I explained to him how sick I felt and how I was sure I’d have nothing to say. He encouraged me.
Jordan was also supporting me – he called to let me know he was thinking of me and that he’d be tuning in.
Tuning in for a disaster, I thought.
Then, we arrived at Radio Mankato – and my stomach dropped.
Dad and I made our way back to the 1420 am, KTOE booth where we waited to meet with Pete and to go on the air.
Pete came out of the booth, all smiles – greeting Dad and I. The three of us talked and laughed – and after Pete reassured me there was no reason to be scared, he introduced me on Talk of the Town.
Thankfully, the topic that day was an easy one for me – we were discussing the latest issue of Womeninc! So, Pete flipped through the magazine and we talked about the people featured and the photos that were taken. And, before I knew it, the show was over – along with my fear of radio!
I’ve been on air with Pete twice since that fateful Friday afternoon. And on June 26, I’ll be back up at KTOE to talk with him again! I owe the full recovery of my radio-phobia to him!
If you’d like to tune in to hear Pete, he’s on the air weekday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. on 1420 am, KTOE.
