Gallery MacNider Art Museum Out & About: Albert Lea, Kay Sauck Food & Family/Chef Jason Snow, Katie Sauck Planning for Thanksgiving, Dianne Spiess Stress-Free Holidays, Joanna Shager Hocker What's For dinner?, LuAnn Ascheman From the Editor: Katie Sauck This debut issue of Entertaining allowed me to do many of the things I enjoy. I did some baking while trying out many of the great recipes featured throughout the magazine, traveled to area communities to see the sights, and I was able to get to know more Womeninc readers by including quite a bit of subscriber involvement. From the ladies who spent the day in Albert Lea, Minnesota (page 26) to the group who attended the Harvest Dinner Party (page 18), the women were an absolute joy to be around. It never ceases to amaze me how easily women can connect with each other, finding things in common or relating about one thing or another. No wonder most women love entertaining it offers us the opportunity to build relationships and to gather together with those we care about. The Going Places section covers some local treasures, showing we don't need to travel to far away places to have fun. Sometimes the most interesting things are right in our own backyard. Take Albert Lea, for instance. We spent a day in the town taking in many of the stores and attractions and had a blast! After reading Out and About: Albert Lea, I hope you call the girls and head out on your own adventure, exploring all the things our area has to offer. Whether your next opportunity to entertain is a large event or a family supper, I hope that you enjoy the ideas, advice, and recipes offered within the new Womeninc Entertaining.

Get Physical Office Space: Working well with others Highlights & Lowlights From the Editor: Natalie S. Knudsen The past year since becoming editor of Womeninc has been filled with great women, wonderful stories, and more than a couple of panic attacks as I discovered the challenges of putting together the quality magazine that women – and men – look forward to six times a year. The women whose stories we feature continue to amaze and inspire me not only with their energy but also with their courage and strength. The Difference is You awards sponsored by Hawkins Chevrolet and Womeninc recognizes these women. I urge you to take time to meet them on page 40. If your life has “gone to the dogs” this summer, now is the time to turn over a new leaf. Maureen and Kristy of Me and My Master Canine Connection can help you do just that with grooming, obedience, and day care for your special friend. We’ve finally settled into our new routines for fall and winter is just around the corner but before the snow flies, it’s a great time for a day trip and maybe some shopping. Yes, it’s true, the Christmas decorations are out in full force already. Take a trip with us to the Historic Dayton House for an afternoon of relaxation, pamper yourself with a makeover – and perhaps a little “me” time, or start your holiday shopping and benefit women in Third World countries at a unique “free trade” gift store. All of us agree that family is important, especially at Thanksgiving when we all gather around the table to share our blessings, but it’s easy to forget the importance of family time between work, school, and activities. Dr. Parnell’s column reminds us not to over schedule and the importance of letting “kids be kids.” I recently read an article in a national women’s magazine urging parents to schedule a family dinner at least twice a week. When I read the article I thought they were just targeting those career folks in the “cities” until my son came home from school and reported that a survey in one of his high school classes showed only about ten percent of the class sat down with at least one parent even once a week for a meal. Family dinners are a priority at our house and I hope they are at yours too – it’s a great time for everyone to share the ups and downs of their day. With our days at the lake and time in the garden winding down, we adopt a new pace. I don’t think anyone anywhere can keep up the pace we set as we try to cram all the fun and sun into our short summer months. Now that tang of fall is in the air, I plan to take time to read a good book, gather my family around the table, and enjoy our favorite comfort foods. I hope you will too.

Growing up, I spent many evenings watching a movie with the family while a fire blazed. As the weather turns cold, we’re focusing on those things that help make a home warm and cozy. Starting on page 34, two experts give us insight on fireplaces. Homeowner Shelley Cords-Swanson featured on page 22 inspires us. She did all the masonry work surrounding her home’s fireplace. By selecting and placing every stone she created a beautiful focal point in her living room. While there’s something comforting in having a fire in the fireplace, there are other elements in the home that can warm things up. On page 17, we meet a woman who adds a textured look to rooms with the faux finish painting technique. With faux finish, even an accent wall can transform a room. Matt Anderson shares his expertise in Conquering Clutter, on page 42 and gives advice for easy ways to tackle cleaning and organization projects in the home. With the winter months approaching, our minds shift to staying indoors. Make a cup of hot chocolate, wrap up in a blanket and enjoy!
